Twitter has indicated it may support Julia Gillard's call for stronger social networking guidelines, with a spokesperson saying the social networking company is in talks with the Prime Minister's Office.

The federal government's new guidelines for dealing with complaints on social networking sites introduces protocols for how to deal with problems and, importantly for law enforcement agencies, also requires a single point of contact for the Government to deal with each company.

Yesterday Ms Gillard announced a deal with Facebook, Microsoft, Yahoo! and Google -- which owns YouTube -- on guidelines for what is acceptable online behaviour.

"These companies have agreed to make this commitment," Ms Gillard said yesterday.

Twitter was the only major social media company not included.

Twitter's head of global policy Colin Crowell tweeted that the company was talking with Ms Gillard's team about the proposal.

"Thanks, we're talking w/your team & our policies re abusive behavior are available to all here," he wrote.

Mr Crowell also to Twitter's policies on abusive behaviour.
