The Senate has voted to give the Congressional Gold Medal to Eugene Goodman, as they hunted for lawmakers during the presidential electoral count.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called the vote , noting Mr Goodman's "foresight in the midst of chaos".
The Senate voted to award Mr Goodman the medal - the highest honour Congress can bestow - by unanimous consent, meaning there were no objections.
Mr Goodman was in the Senate chamber as Mr Schumer spoke, and the entire Senate stood and turned toward him, giving him a standing ovation. He put his hand on his heart.
Mr Goodman has been in the chamber for much of the impeachment trial, in which House Democrats are charging that former President Donald Trump incited the 6 January insurrection.
The trial saw new video of Mr Goodman as he unknowingly headed toward a location where the mob had gathered.
In one video, Mr Goodman can be seen running down a hallway and frantically gesturing for the Republican Senator to turn away from the mob.
After he was warned, Senator Romney, who is a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump, can be seen running in the opposite direction towards safety.
In another video from the day, former Vice President Mike Pence and his family are seen being rushed away by Secret Service officers as the rioters called for his death.
The trial wrapped up for the day on Friday night and will resume on Saturday.
