A broader range of doctors will be allowed to exempt Australians from being vaccinated for medical reasons under new draft laws.

The legislation, introduced to parliament on Thursday, means practitioners other than GPs - including paediatricians and infectious diseases physicians - could have their exemptions recognised by the Australian immunisation register.

It follows feedback from specialists who said sending patients back to GPs just to get exemptions added a burden of time for those people.
