A range of coordinated packages of tailored support for people suffering mental illnesses has been unveiled by the government.

'We need to lift the level': Fels shares firsthand knowledge of Australia's mental health system

The government has announced the $350 million package of measures following a review by the National Mental Health Commission.

The review found many of the four million Australians who experience mental health conditions don't receive the support they need.

National Mental Health Commission chairman Allan Fels has first-hand experience with mental illness, often advocating on behalf of his daughter, who has schizophrenia.

He's speaking here to SBS Chief Political correspondent Catherine McGrath.
