Year 12 students registered by text message on Wednesday to get their ATAR results sent in a SMS next Monday morning but ended up getting their results back immediately in a text message reply.
One of them was Mathilde McInnes, a student from Castlemaine in regional Victoria.
She said as soon as she registered she received her results "instantly, it was just immediate."
Her results were better than she expected, she said.
"But at the same time I was like, 'is this real, like, should I get excited about this and then be told it's fake'.
"So I just instantly messaged a bunch of my friends, like, 'has this happened to you?'."
Victorian education officials confirmed that reports ATAR results mistakenly sent early were correct.
Early on Thursday morning the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority and the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre said 2075 VCE students received the early SMS results and both the VCE result and the ATAR are correct.
In a brief statement to AAP late on Wednesday the Minister for Education James Merlino said: "Clearly a significant error has been made and a full investigation will be carried out to get to the bottom of this."
VTAC and the VCAA will contacting schools and each of the students affected to confirm the accuracy of the information and provide further support.
