More than a year after Britain voted to leave the European Union, the aftermath of Brexit still reverberates throughout the United Kingdom.
In reporter Evan Williams and producer Joel Tozer’s recent Dateline film, they visit the east coast town of Boston – where 76 per cent of citizens voted to leave the European Union.
Much of the story was focused on Julian Thompson, a Boston-born man who’s leading a campaign to unite migrant and other communities and bring the town together. Interestingly, Julian voted for Brexit himself.
In the latest episode of The Intern Diaries, Joel says one of the angles this episode sought to analyse was the uncertainties affecting the town’s migrant community and how they are dealing with them.
“I think many people still don’t really understand how that vote will affect many of the migrants who are already living in the UK,” he told Dateline cadet Hashela Kumarawansa.
“I think this type of film shows not only why people voted for Brexit, but I think the people in this film were really honest about the uncertainties the vote has created from both sides.”
“They don’t regret their vote, but they recognize that it’s created some uncertainties for the people in the town.”
