Golf, so the saying goes, is a game whose aim is to hit a very small ball into an even smaller hole, with weapons singularly ill-designed for the purpose.


And while Queen Mary Stuart of Scotland was said to be a keen golfer in the 16th century, almost all prestigious golf courses did not allow women for centuries after that.

But times are changing.
