AFL athlete and avid surfer Lance Appleby has been named as the second person killed in a shark attack in Australia in a week.
Friends have paid tribute to the 28-year-old, with friends describing Mr Appleby as a "loved character" and a "bloody champion man".
South Australia Police say Mr Appleby was surfing at Granites beach south-west of Streaky Bay on Thursday evening when witnesses reported seeing a shark attack him.
A friend of Lance Appleby's, Jeff Schmucker, told Channel Nine says it is devastating to lose such a good-natured person.
"I saw him catch a wave and he rode it right until the end and flipped out - and proceeded to paddle back. He was taken not long after he flipped off the waves."

Vigils have been held in Montenegro to honour the victims of one of the worst mass killings in the country.
People gathered in cities across the country to light candles and hold a minute's silence.
A man shot dead 12 people in the country's south before turning his gun on himself.
Police named the attacker as 45-year-old Aco Martinovic, saying he initially shot dead four people at a restaurant after an altercation.
It was the second mass shooting in less than three years in the same town of Cetinje.
Vigil attendee, Sanja Jovanovic says she is angry over the government's unwillingness to accept its share of responsibility for the violence that permeates the society.
"I find it shameful that no one is accepting responsibility for either the mass killings from two years ago - or the second one, which also indicates that society is in crisis. I'm eager to see what the people of Montenegro have to say about this and to see how it all develops."

Italian designer Rosita Missoni, the co-founder of the fashion house Missoni, has died at the age of 93.
In a statement, the family-owned company paid tribute to her as "a visionary figure in the Italian and international fashion world".
Born into a family of textile artisans close to the northern Italian town of Varese, Rosita studied modern languages.
On a trip to London in 1948 to improve her English, she met her husband, Ottavio - and they launched the fashion business together.

Apple has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit in the United States for A$153 million (US$95 million).
Mobile phone owners alleged Apple routinely recorded their private conversations after they activated Siri unintentionally, and disclosed these conversations to third parties such as advertisers.
Two plaintiffs alleged their mentions of Air Jordan sneakers and Olive Garden restaurants triggered ads for those products.
Another plaintiff alleged he got ads for a brand name surgical treatment after discussing it in what he thought was a private conversation with his doctor.
Apple isn't acknowledging any wrongdoing in the settlement, which still must be approved by US District Judge Jeffrey White.
If the settlement is approved, tens of millions of consumers who owned iPhones and other Apple devices from September 17, 2014, through the end of last year could file claims.
Each consumer could receive up to A$32 per Siri-equipped device covered by the settlement, although the payment could be reduced or increased, depending on the volume of claims.

Australians are being urged to be cautious about the risk of being trapped into subscriptions for gym memberships or wellness apps during the New Year period.
Financial Services Minister Stephen Jones says the federal government is considering ways to stop to subscription traps as part of the government's crackdown on unfair trading practices.
He says businesses don't have to wait for the new laws to come into effect - and can change their practices now.
"It's really easy to sign-up to a new gym membership, a new streaming service, a new meal delivery service - but almost impossible to get out. It is a dodgy practice. Other countries are cracking down on it, so is Australia. We have already announced that we will be introducing new laws to keep these sort of dodgy practices out of the Australian economy."

In Tennis, Australian Kimberly Birrell has lost to Ukraine's Anhelina Kalinina in the quarterfinals of the Brisbane International.
The gruelling match on Pat Rafter Arena lasted more than two and a half hours, with Kalinina claiming victory 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.
Officially ranked 113th, Birrell reached the quarterfinals after defeating world No. 8 Emma Navarro - in her first Top 10 win in six years.
The 26-year-old says has big goals.
"I have much bigger goals than just reaching the top 100. I think I want to be comfortably inside the top 100. If I can just focus on the process, the ranking, the points, the results will follow."
