As the news that Britain has voted to leave the European Union sinks in, many of us might be feeling a little like this:

So here is how it happened, and what's happened since, explained in 12 tweets.

The Brexit referendum prompted the highest voting turnout ever in Britain, where voting is not compulsory.

As expected, the majority of young people voted to stay in the EU, while older Britons voted to leave.

And while England and Wales voted for Brexit, Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to remain.

Which has got people questioning whether Scotland and Northern Ireland will want to break away next.

The result of the referendum has already had an impact on global financial markets.

And the Pound Sterling and Australian dollar have been hit.
