Gweagal spears returned to traditional owners

Published 24 April 2024, 8:27 am
More than 250 years after they were first taken, four spears stolen by Captain James Cook and his crew, after they arrived at Kamay - Botany Bay, have been handed over to their traditional owners. Representatives of the La Perouse Aboriginal Community travelled to Cambridge University where the artefacts, known as the 'Gweagal Spears', had been kept since 1771. Among those attending were direct descendants of those who crafted the spears. It follows a 30-year campaign to see the items returned.
