Collingwood forward Travis Varcoe has been given an award for speaking out against racism.
Last month he spoke out publicly about the racist abuse he had received on social media.
Varcoe decided to make the comments to the ABC’s 7.30 program after several other players found themselves targeted by online racism at the start of this season.
As a result he was presented with the Standing Up to Bigotry Award by the Anti-Defamation Commission, an NGO whose stated aim is to counter anti-Semitism and other forms of racism.
“I am humbled by the recognition,” Varcoe said.
“The ADC and others who carry the fight to discrimination do so much good work. I am happy to be contributing in my own way. Hopefully, we are on our way to a more tolerant and just society.”
The ADC’s chairman, Dvir Abramovich, praised Varcoe for using his position to “build bridges of understanding".
“We are proud to recognise and honour Travis for his spirited commitment to promoting respect and inclusivity, and for having the courage to speak out against the virus of racism,” he said.
“He has certainly set an example for many to follow, and we are delighted to partner up with him in breaking down barriers and ending discrimination.”
