Greg Bird eyes Origin with point to prove

Normally Bird is the word, but it's Origin that commands Greg Bird's recent thoughts.

Greg Bird is happy to admit his recent omission from the Australian side ‘stung’, but says there’s nothing he can do about it.

Speaking to NITV’s League Nation Live, Bird says there comes a time when selectors simply choose to go down a different path.

“It’s obviously disappointing, but there comes a time when a younger player will come in and take your spot.

“If they’re better fitted to the role then good luck to them. It’s disappointing but that’s football", said Bird.

Bird will surely use the upcoming State of Origin series to remind selectors what they overlooked, with the long serving Blue primed for a big series.

But much of the debate surrounding New South Wales does not focus on Bird’s Origin selection, more Laurie Daley’s search for a dependable halves option.

The 15-game Origin veteran threw his selectors cap on and told the League Nation Live team who would be his ideal halves pairing.

“It’s been this way for ten years since Joey retired, I just want the best players who are playing.

“Probably the form halfback is James Maloney. He’s playing wonderful football down there at Cronulla, and one of my favourite players is Mitchell Pearce.

"I’m not sure where we stand with his selection but I love getting out there with him," Bird replied.

Bird and New South Wales failed to defend their Origin crown in 2015, and with courageous captain Paul Gallen announcing this year will be his final campaign, the Maitland product wants to send his ‘Blues Brother’ out in style.

“I don’t think you need any inspiration when it comes to State of Origin, it is the pinnacle of Rugby League. But, being a good mate of Gal’s, hopefully we can get out there and put in a great performance for him and hopefully send him off a winner".
