REBEL WITH A CAUSE – Tiga Bayles is the fourth episode of the four-part series that celebrates the personal journeys of four outstanding First Nations rebels; Senator Neville Bonner, Poet Oodgeroo Noonuccal, Magistrate Pat O' Shane and Media icon Tiga Bayles who put everything on the line for change.
Birri Gubba Gungalu man, Harold 'Tiga’ Bayles, was the oldest of six children raised in Central Queensland under the oppressive Aboriginal Protection Act. Moving to Brisbane in 1970, he was activated by the Black Power movement. Becoming instrumental in the NSW Land Rights movement, Tiga was pivotal in the establishment of Radio Redfern, 98. 9 FM Triple A Murri Radio and eventually the Murri School.
For Tiga, each hand- built and community- owned hub provided an alternative means by which each person could grow, articulate, and reach true self- fulfilment. A father of 8 daughters and a key community spokesperson, Tiga strived to reach the status of " an honourable ancestor". His life was full of immense pressure and responsibility. Succumbing to illness in his early 60s saw Tiga' s visionary work and role as an influential elder cut short.
