Menang Noongar artist Kiya Watt has collaborated with the Haus of Dizzy jewellery label for a new range of glittery earrings which portray the six Noongar seasons.
She recently gained public attention after her artwork featured on the dress worn by the Indigenous doll introduced to the ABC children’s show Play School.
The project came about after Ms Watt met the founder of the conversation-starting brand, Wiradjuri woman Kristy Dickinson.
“It had to represent both of us,” Ms Watt told NITV News.
“Haus of Dizzy has glitter and all that kind of glam and I wanted to just incorporate culture and make it kind of educational.”
Each set of earrings in the collection has a colour and image with cultural significance behind it.
The self-proclaimed ‘Queen of Bling’ – whose work is sometimes irreverent and sometimes political - says she is committed to sharing traditional culture and knowledge in the fashion and art space.
“That’s what I love to do, any collaboration where I get to work with other black women, and working together and embracing our whole identity and showcasing what we have to the world,” Ms Dickinson said.
“It’s two sides of Australia coming together, two mobs. Through her beautiful artwork and through my crazy, vibrant, jewellery, we’re making art for your ears.”
Ms Watt said it was a dream come true to work with one of her heroes.
“She’s very well known across Australia,” Ms Watt said.
“Heaps of celebrities wear her stuff and she’s just incredible.”
