NRL legends have urged Greg Bird to ‘play smarter’ after the Gold Coast Titans forward again found himself in trouble for disciplinary reasons.

Bird was sent to the sin-bin at a crucial time in the Titans loss to the Canberra Raiders last weekend and his absence ultimately led to the Gold Coast’s defeat.

League Nation Live’s Justin Hodges implored the former Titans captain to curb his aggression.

“We all like the way Birdy plays; he plays hard and plays an aggressive game. But I think sometimes he has to realise when it’s the right time to do it and when it’s the wrong time.

“By doing that he obviously let his teammates down and got ten minutes in the bin.

“Maybe there’s better use of his anger, taking a tough run or something.

Scott Prince, a former teammate of Bird agreed with Hodges assessment, saying the Bird must learn his lesson in order for the Titans to claim a final position in 2016.

“I think it’s the way Birdy plays the game. He likes to play tough and he loves bending the rules.

“If he can get away with a bit of niggle, he will.

“He was warned on this occasion, he was told the consequences and it cost them”, said Prince.
