Reports of alleged assault and rape at NT youth detention centres

There have been more reports of serious assault, including rape, at Northern Territory detention centres during the past two years.

A series of officer incident reports from Northern Territory youth detention facilities, obtained under freedom of information laws by the ABC, detail 19 assaults in the last four months of the former Country Liberal Party’s term and 11 under Labor - including an alleged rape of a male detainee by another detainee.

The alleged victim did not make a formal complaint, but the alleged offender was removed from contact with other detainees.

The documents largely outline assaults by detainees, but also reported the use of force by staff. Overall the documents indicate incidents have decreased under Labor.
It comes just one month after the NT Government offered support for all of the, and just weeks after another youth justice officer was stood down over the alleged use of unacceptable force against a detainee.

Last month the Territory Government introduced an amendment to the youth justice act which, if passed, would see tighter restrictions on the use of force and stop the practice of routine strip searches.
