Evonne Goolagong Cawley and Ash Barty, two of the country's most celebrated tennis players, have been immortalised as one-of-a-kind Barbie dolls.

In celebration of International Women’s Day, Barbie is recognising the power of Blak female friendships and sportswomen.

Ngarigo woman and former world No. 1 tennis player Barty said that being made into a Barbie doll as a Blak woman was emotional.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that I’d be a Barbie myself," she said.

"It’s just such an incredible experience to be a part of.”
Wiradjuri woman and two-time Wimbledon singles champion Goolagong Cawley was equally thrilled.

“When I first heard about it, I thought 'that is so cool' because it just came out of the blue ... I wasn’t expecting anything like this," she said.

"It’s just absolutely amazing ... I just love it and can’t believe it’s happened.”

Ms Goolagong Cawley emphasised the importance of role models in her life and work, especially through her Indigenous national program, which encourages young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls to pursue their dreams.
“It’s important for [young Blak girls] to hear our stories of how we got there and how rough the road can be,” she said.

“We’re trying to create a natural pathway for Blak kids to find their dreams and to achieve their dreams."

Both tennis legends are known for their long-standing friendship, which has transcended the court.

Barty fondly recalled meeting Goolagong at Junior Wimbledon in 2011 and immediately recognising a strong connection.
“So many things that we could relate with each other in tennis but also in life, so I think it was just that connection straight away,” Ms Barty said.

Ms Goolagong expressed a deep understanding and bond with Barty that went beyond the tennis court.

“We understand each other perfectly and we never talked about tennis ever," she said.

"I was more concerned with her well-being, and I thought 'maybe it’s time I better look after my little sister.'"

The dolls themselves are also a tribute to significant moments in the tennis stars' careers.

Barty and Goolagong's friendship transcends the tennis court.
“To see what you can become, to see what’s possible … I think now it’s just opened up this whole new world of possibilities and dreams for young girls in particular.”
