Daniel Wells' future at North Melbourne is not guaranteed, with both club and player still divided over contract talks.

Wells is a free agent and is one of a host of Kangaroos not contracted beyond this season.

North Melbourne has tabled a one-year offer to the 31-year-old veteran.

The 241-gamer has been hampered by knee and Achilles injuries in recent years, playing just 30 games out of a possible 69 since 2014.

With this is mind, the Kangaroos contract offer is believed to be far less than Wells’ previous contract, with the club reportedly installing a clause in the deal that will trigger a further year extension, should Wells play the required amount of games.

Wells managed 18 games in 2016 and has been one of the Kangaroos best, averaging 23 possessions a game, inspiring North to another finals appearance.

But given the recent decision by Coach Brad Scott to refresh the club’s ageing playing list and move on stars Brent Harvey, Nick Dal Santo, Michael Firrito and Drew Petrie, it’s clear the club will prioritise the development of youth ahead of the likes of Wells.

Wells is an unrestricted free agent and is free to leave the club should he wish, but no club has stated its intentions to offer the Western Australian product a lifeline so far.

The ongoing contract saga further complicates North’s preparations for their elimination final against Adelaide on Saturday night, with the club .

Should the Kangaroos season end at the weekend, further criticism is expected to be levied at club management, with the future of several stars complicating matters at the most important stage of the season.
