During World War II, Tulle Fiil and her sister, Gerda, are sent to a German prison due to the actions of the resistance group. Back at the inn in Hvidsten, their mother, Gudrun, struggles to bring her daughters home while raising Tulle's daughter.

Best friends Emil and Viktor are about to launch a company together. All is well until the confident Viktor starts dating the conflict-averse Emil's mum, Helle. Suddenly, Emil's best friend also becomes his stepdad.

Danish and Swedish police are forced to work together when a body is found on the border. The mystery deepens when they discover it includes dismembered parts from two corpses.
