Annemiek Van Vleuten's condition after Olympics crash not critical

Annemiek van Vleuten was in the lead of the womens Olympic road race before crashing in sickening fashion on the descent from the final climb. Lying immobile in the gutter, everyone feared the worst but updates on her condition have been relatively positive given the potential severity of the fall.

The Dutch rider was taken to hospital and placed in the Intensive Care Unit, but was quickly reported as responding to questions and surprisingly mild injuries.

The Netherlands team's chief medical officer Cees Rein van den Hoogenband said, "Annemiek went through a total CT scan and is stable now. She suffers from a heavy concussion but there were no further abnormalities seen on the scan."

"She will stay in intensive care for the next 24 hours. She is fully conscious and her reactions are adequate."

Van Vleuten herself was back on Twitter quickly enough, congratulating her compatriot Anna van der Breggen on her gold medal before giving an update on her condition.
It would have been by far the biggest career result for the 33 year-old Dutch woman, whose three victories this season have all come from time trials.

Racing for Australian outfit, Orica-AIS, she has been very consistent in major races this season with top 10 finishes in Ronde van Vlaanderen, Strade Bianche and Ronde van Drenthe.
No news yet on her recovery program or outlook for the future, but from her latest tweet it seems that Annemiek van Vleuten is very keen to move on from this disappointment.
