Bardet: It will be 'a great sign' if Tour de France goes ahead

Romain Bardet believes it would be "a great sign” if the 2020 Tour de France goes ahead.

The French climber was set to take part in the Giro d’Italia, as well as the Tokyo Olympics, but will now wait with all events postponed in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Despite the standstill, the AG2R La Mondiale rider hopes medical authorities will have controlled the virus by the time July’s showpiece event takes place LIVE on SBS.

“It seems to me that it might be less utopian, if the pandemic has been controlled by then in France, to organise the Tour de France,” Bardet told L’Equipe.

“We’re all going through difficult times, but it would be a great sign if the Tour could be held in July.

“It would mean that the health situation had improved, and that we were on the right track… But it’s probably too early to say whether that’s possible.”

The 29-year-old had prioritised the Olympics this season but has since labelled the decision to delay the Games until 2021 as both “reasonable and logical”.

“I didn’t know how anyone was going to be able to take part in the Olympics while there was still so much uncertainty and the world was in the state it’s in,” Bardet said.

“It would be selfish of me to only be concerned by the sporting aspect of everything that’s happening.”
