Edmondson to focus on the road in 2017

Annette Edmondson (Wiggle High5) has spent her career splitting her attentions between the track and the road. It’s something that will continue for the 2017 season though with the focus more on the tarmac than the boards.

The 25-year-old focused almost completely on the track last season with the lure of Olympic medals in Rio.

Unfortunately, the results weren’t what she had hoped, with the team pursuit team crashing in warm-ups and limping to fifth.

Her eighth place in the omnium was below personal expectation with many picking her to take a medal, albeit in a very tough field. So 2017 will be a change of pace for Edmondson.

“The madison was just announced as an event for women at the World champs so that has tempted me to stick to the track, as I was thinking of having a year off it,” Edmondson said.

“I’m really excited to have a crack at that, maybe have a break from some of the other events, like the omnium I’ve done for five years now. I think it’s time to hand that one over, Amy Cure’s put her hand up for that. I think also with the changes it’s a good time for me to try something different as well.”

With the track nationals in March, Edmondson will have a freer reign to pursue her objectives on the road, riding with one of the biggest women’s teams in the world, Wiggle High5.

"I really want to have a good year on the road, I want to get fit and spend some time focusing on that," she said. "It’s hard to do both well and normally I’m only good at the end of the road season. I’m hoping to have a bit more of a successful role and get stronger in the team.”

Edmondson outlined some goals for the season with her focus likely to fall on the style of races where she can excel, in the sprints against the other fast women in the peloton.

“I think my first event after the track champs will be the China World Cup (Women’s World Tour event Chongming Island) that’s nice and flat, it’s in May and it’s a good starter," she said.

"I’m actually doing the Giro for the first time as well so I’m looking forward to having a crack at that. They have a couple of sprint stages there, I’d like to make the Road worlds team and do the team trial with Wiggle High5 (at the world championships), those would be my top priorities.”
