Eekhoff to challenge road worlds disqualification at CAS

Famously disqualified at the 2019 UCI Road World Championships Under-23 road race last month, Dutch cyclist Nils Eekhoff will head to the Court of Arbitration of Sport to challenge the decision, and he has the backing of his cycling federation, reports Dutch outlet NOS.

Eekhoff won the sprint in the Under 23 men's road race at the World Championships in Yorkshire.

But more than an hour after the finish, he was relegated for drafting off the national team car following a mid-race crash.

Furore swarmed beyond the Dutch cycling team and in the wider cycling community as a viral clip of Eekhoff filtering through the convoy of cars appeared to clear him.

The UCI later released footage of the incident which seemed to implicate Eekhoff, but it came more than 24 hours later and does not explain the jury's lack of decisive action to disqualify him much earlier in the race.

"I crashed, got a dislocated shoulder, put it back, but also had a mechanical so it took longer," Eekhoff told reporters after the sanction back at the Dutch team hotel. "Then I got back on, the car brought me back to the caravan, and at that moment I rode myself towards the peloton.

"At the moment I crashed, it was still 125km to go. The race was still to be ridden. In my opinion, I fought for it. It should be possible after a crash that you can be brought back to the caravan. I had no idea I was taking a risk."
