The 28-year-old said that he wanted to convert his near misses over the past few years into wins and that the Swiss registered team was the best option.

“I am happy to sign with Team Katusha-Alpecin," he said. "I have achieved many top results but now I want to go one step further and would like to win races."

The versatile Haas's potential as a classics and six-day stage race rider is well known, with his fourth place performances at the 2017 Amstel Gold Race and Santos Tour Down Under pointers to his abilities.

“We are happy to announce the signing of Nathan,” Katusha-Alpecin general manager José Azevedo said. “He brings to us his strength in both the Ardennes classics and one-week races.

Haas will be the second Australian after Robbie McEwen to ride for the formation and brings a similarly exuberant racing personality to the team which launched in 2009 as a Russian focussed cycling project.

"He’s an interesting rider as he is basically an all-arounder in that he is strong and experienced in sprint finals but is also an option to support a leader in a key role for stages races," Azevedo said.
