How to watch MLS in 2025?

Beginning Monday March 3, SBS will air one live game a week for the duration of the 2025 season, as part of the league’s ‘Sunday Night Soccer’ slate.

Every Monday morning, Australian time, fans will witness the most compelling regular season match-ups on offer as 30 clubs bid to lift the Supporters’ Shield en route to the coveted MLS Cup.

What is the MLS?

The MLS, or, Major League Soccer, is the highest tier of football in North America and comprises 30 teams; of which 27 are from the United States and the remaining three from Canada.

Football in the United States follows a regular and post-season format, with the former taking place from February 23 and finishing on October 19, before the playoffs carry the competition into early December for the MLS Cup.

San Diego FC is the league’s newest club which means the 30-year competition is now evenly split into two conferences of 15 teams.

Each team will play a 34-game season, with teams playing their conference opponents home-and-away in addition to six one-off matches against cross-conference opposition.

The Eastern and Western Conferences are divided geographically, where the top nine from each side will qualify for the playoffs.

How do the Playoffs work?

The MLS Cup Playoffs take place after the regular season and features five rounds in total, including the MLS Cup.

The Eastern and Western conferences will contest the playoffs on opposite sides of the bracket, beginning with the Wild Card round which pits eighth against ninth place in a knockout match.

Wild card winners will then progress to the first round of the playoffs, where teams will contest a best-of-three series based on their final position in the regular season (1st v 8th, 2nd v 7th, 3rd v 6th, 4th v 5th).

From there, knockout football resumes with the Conference semi-finals and finals preceding the prestigious MLS Cup.

Stars to watch?

The MLS is home to some of the world’s greatest players, including perhaps its greatest ever as Lionel Messi attempts to guide Inter Miami to a maiden MLS Cup crown.

Messi is joined in Miami by former Barcelona teammates Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, with Blaugrana legend Javier Mascherano taking the reins as coach.

Standing in the way of Miami’s mission are 29 other clubs with plenty of star-power to match, including the likes of:
  • Miguel Almiron (Atlanta United)
  • Aleksey Miranchuk (Atlanta United)
  • Wilfried Zaha (Charlotte FC)
  • Evander (FC Cincinnati)
  • Christian Benteke (DC United)
  • Federico Bernardeschi (Toronto FC)
  • Lorenzo Insigne (Toronto FC)
  • Carles Gil (New England Revolution)
  • Emil Forsberg (New York Red Bulls)
  • Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (New York Red Bulls)
  • Jonathan Bamba (Chicago Fire)
  • Luis Muriel (Orlando City)
  • Josef Martinez (San Jose Earthquakes)
  • Hirving Lozano (San Diego FC)
  • Luciano Acosta (FC Dallas)
  • Hugo Lloris (LAFC)
  • Olivier Giroud (LAFC)
  • Cengiz Under (LAFC)
  • Roman Burki (St. Louis City)
  • Maya Yoshida (LA Galaxy)
  • Marco Reus (LA Galaxy)
  • Riqui Puig (LA Galaxy)

Are there any Australians?

Six Australians currently ply their trade in the MLS, including Socceroos duo Kye Rowles (DC United) and Patrick Yazbek (Nashville SC).

Giuseppe Bovalina (Vancouver Whitecaps), Jake Girdwood-Reich (St. Louis City), Lachlan Brook (Real Salt Lake) and Ariath Piol (Real Salt Lake) round out the Australian contingent.

Who won the MLS in 2024?

Despite Inter Miami’s record-breaking regular season, headlined by their best overall record (22W-8D-4L) and points total (74), it was the LA Galaxy who won the MLS Cup after defeating the New York Red Bulls 2-1.

The Galaxy have won more MLS Cups (6) than any other club in the competition and sit level with DC United as the most successful clubs in league history, each with 13 pieces of silverware.
