Jedinak back for France blockbuster

Skipper Mile Jedinak returns to lead Australia into battle in their FIFA World Cup opener against France in Kazan tonight, in a late vote of confidence from coach Bert van Marwijk.

Despite starting neither of the warm-up matches against the Czech Republic or Hungary, the talismanic midfielder is the only change to the team which won 2-1 in Budapest.

Making way is Massimo Luongo, who was replaced at half-time by Jedinak, 33, against the Magyars.

And he is somewhat unlucky to miss out.

The switch may surprise some with Luongo’s superior mobility seen by many as crucial against the lightning quick transition of a France midfield including N’Golo Kante and Paul Pogba.

But van Marwijk has opted for experience in pairing Jedinak with Aaron Mooy in the screening roles.

Tom Rogic retains his playmaking role ahead of Jackson Irvine whilst Mathew Leckie and Robbie Kruse start on the wings, with Andrew Nabbout the lone striker in another affirmation of his talent from van Marwijk.

Goalkeeper Mat Ryan starts behind a now trusted back four of Trent Sainsbury, Mark Milligan, Josh Risdon and Aziz Behich in what is anticipated to be a hectic night for Australia’s defence.
