Kurtis Marschall has narrowly missed out on winning Australia's first medal of the world indoor championships after finishing fourth in the pole vault.
France's London Olympic champion Renaud Lavillenie secured the gold with a clearance of 5.90 metres with current outdoor champion Sam Kendricks of the United States taking silver and Poland's Piotr Lisek scooping bronze.
But 20-year-old Marschall added to his burgeoning reputation in a loaded field that also boasted reigning Olympic champion Thiago Braz alongside three other former world champions and will head to next month's Commonwealth Games favourite for gold.
Marschall, a top-10 finisher at the Rio Olympics and last year's world championships in London, led after four rounds when he cleared 5.80 at the first attempt to equal his new personal best.
The South Australian recovered well from a slow start when he sent the bar toppling from with his first vault at 5.45m.
But he sailed over with his next attempt and followed up with a confident clearance of 5.60 and then scraped over at 5.70 as the bar wobbled but stayed in place.
Lavillenie, who eschewed the chance to vault until 5.70 then went straight to 5.85 which he cleared to take the lead.
It proved to be too much for Marschall to match and after hitting the bar at his first attempt at the new height he opted against a second and went straight to 5.90 but was unable to beat the bar.
"You're not really supposed to be happy with fourth but I can't tell you how stoked I am," Marschall told AAP.
"I've never jumped indoors before this week and to be honest I didn't think 5.80 would be enough to be more than the top eight. I gambled a bit going to 5.90 and I was disappointed that I didn't clear it but overall it's been well worth the 30-hour trip."
Earlier in the day Nick Hough finished seventh in his semi-final of the 60m hurdles.
