Trentin's move to Orica-Scott comes shortly after the team announced it had employed high-quality Spanish climber Mikel Nieve to further improve its prospects for stage races.
The Italian brings with him a classics craft honed at Belgian powerhouse Quick-Step Floors, where he served as an understudy to riders like Tom Boonen, Niki Terpstra and Philippe Gilbert.
The move from that star-studded team is designed to open up opportunities for himself in races like the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix.
“When I got in contact with the team I was straight away fascinated by the project and the role they saw for me in the Spring Classics,” Trentin said.
“It’s been a great six years with Quick-Step Floors but for sure in the next two years, I aim to make a further step in the Classics and in other races too.
“I know a few of the Orica-SCOTT riders from racing in the under 23's in Italy but I really look forward to getting to know everyone better and working well as a team.”
Team sporting director Matt White said the 28-year-old Trentin added an "X-factor" to a squad which already has veteran Mat Hayman, the 2016 Paris-Roubaix winner, and classics prospect Luke Durbridge in its lineup.
“We have a developing Classics team that has been together for a while now, plus some great older heads," White said."
"We are led by Mathew Hayman, who has been passing his knowledge onto our next generation of Aussie stars like Luke Durbridge and Alex Edmondson but Matteo will give us that X factor that will only bolster the groups aim for more success in that very special time of the season.”
As Trentin arrives, Orica-Scott will say goodbye to another developing one-day prospect, Magnus Cort Nielsen, who will move on to Astana from 2018.
The Dane grew in stature as a rider while at Orica-Scott, picking up two stage wins at the 2016 Vuelta Espana and a race victory at the 2017 Clásica de Almería.
"I would like to thank everybody at Orica-Scott, who helped me to develop as a rider over the last three seasons, he said. "I have really enjoyed my time there and made some great friends."
