'There are crazy things happening' - Diamanti documents wild border cross attempt

Alessandro Diamanti's Instagram story showcased crazy scenes on Monday night as A-League clubs scrambled to travel into New South Wales before the border with Victoria closed at midnight.

Western United's marquee man Diamanti filmed the events as himself and the rest of his squad packed their bags and boarded a bus to the airport to fly to Canberra.

"I'm going to tell you all. The journey begins," Diamanti said via his Instragam story.

“Tonight at midnight, they’re going to close the Victoria borders due to COVID-19 so all the Melbourne teams were informed at 8pm that we need to move to Sydney to continue our season.

“We were first told we were going to go by plane and then we were told they couldn’t leave by plane the whole way.

“At 10pm, we were then told we would get on a plane to Canberra and drive to Sydney."

Teammate Besart Berisha can also be seen on the story describing the events as "unbelievable" and remarking that he had never experienced anything like it in his career.

The players were seemingly not informed of what was going on or what route their journey was going to take, as Diamanti expressed later in the story.

"We still don’t know what’s happening," Diamanti continued.

"Now we’re driving back but we don’t know if it’s possible to drive to Sydney.

"Who knows what’s happening."
Upon arriving at the airport, the team ventured around the terminal in a frenzy trying to locate their plane, which Diamanti said further delayed their efforts.

"We were all rushed to the airport and stuffed in the buses as animals," Diamanti recounted.

"We finally got to the plane at 11:30pm – we got to the wrong gate at first and drove around the airport in various buses, we were supposed to leave by midnight. The flight was meant to take 40 minutes."

Eventually, all the Italian could do was joke about what was happening.

“I’m pretty sure they’re going to tell us in 50 minutes that we’re going to go by bike,” he joked.

With their flight being cancelled due to bad weather, the players were forced to check in to airport hotels for the night, where players from other teams had fallen victim to the same fate.

The story ends with Diamanti and Berisha laughing with Melbourne Victory midfielder Migjen Basha about the situation.

“If you want to have different experiences, I recommend you come to Australia as there are crazy things happening," Diamanti said - as Berisha and Basha greeted each other.
