The 2018 road world champion wants another go at the rainbow jersey and believes the Tour de France which is scheduled to finish 20 September, just before the worlds road race, will be the ideal preparation.

"I come out of the Tour (usually) then it's onto San Sebastian which has been ideal for me," Valverde said via the virtual press conference where Movisar team outlined its goals for the rejigged cycling season.
"But this time I'll be onto worlds. By preparing for the Tour, you can kill two birds with one stone."

Valverde and Enric Mas will lead the Spanish registered team at the Tour de France and the Vuelta which is scheduled to run from 20 October to 8 November.

"These will be two grand tours very different for everyone," Valverde said.

"The Tour de France, with all circumstances surrounding it, will be a different one, and we’ll try to take advantage.

"The Vuelta will be entirely held in the north of Spain, probably with cold and bad weather, yet it will be the same for everybody. It’s a special year, with big efforts in such a short span, and I like that challenge.”

Mas said riding for Julian Alaphilippe last year at the Tour de France while the Frenchman held yellow for much of the race was a real learning experience.

“The yellow jersey with Julian for so long meant I had plenty of time to soak up every detail of what it meant," Mas said.

"Not just the racing, but off the bike as well – nutrition, the media responsibilities, and so on – and for this year that could be very useful.”

Runner-up at the Vuelta in 2018, Mas is also looking forward to co-leading Movistar at his home grand tour alongside Valverde.

“I'm so excited about this dual challenge of the Tour and Vuelta, and even more thrilled to have Alejandro alongside for the two. He’s always there, he’s one to follow, and I’ll learn a lot from him.

"These have been rough months for everybody, yet thanks to Telefónica’s support, we’ve been able to go to bed everyday calm about our jobs, our chances, and now think about our return with full confidence."
