Bogut on his one regret from his incredible career

Andrew Bogut opened up to Megan Hustwaite about his retirement from professional basketball, what he is teaching his son and the one regret he had from his career - during the first episode of TAB Courtside 1v1 on SBS.

WATCH TAB Courtside 1v1 on SBS with Megan Hustwaite weekly on Thursday from 7pm (AEDT) via , or catch up via .

Bogut is one of the most decorated Australian players of all-time.

The Melbourne-born centre was the number 1 draft pick in 2005 and won an NBA championship with the Golden State Warriors in 2015.

However, Bogut - now 36 - admits he regrets not enjoying his incredible career "as much as I could or should have."

Asked by Hustwaite when he was happiest in his career, Bogut was typically honest in his response.
"Good question, probably never. That was one regret I had, not enjoying it as much as I could have. When you're in the bubble of the NBA everything revolves around you for your family off the court," Bogut said.

"I need my meal at this time, I need my nap at this time. I leave the house at this time. I have my coffee at this time. Everything is regimented. That's being a professional athlete.

"That's why the good ones that make it they have those routines. And you have to have it, that's the unfortunate reality.

"I didn't enjoy it as much because after a bad game you're pissed off and trying to have a good game the next one.

"And after a good game, you think 'If I'm riding too high, someone is going to get me in the next game'.

"I just didn't enjoy it as much as I could have or should have. It just goes to show how intense and how much work you have to put in to compete with the best athletes in the world."

The interview was the first as part of new SBS series Courtside 1v1, which gives fans a chance to get to know more about the unique personalities from the NBA, WNBA, NBL and WNBL, which help shape basketball in Australia.

Hustwaite, who has been covering all levels of Australian basketball for the past 13 years as a reporter, commentator and journalist, will helm the weekly show - every Thursday at 7pm (AEDT) via  - where she interviews stars of the past, present and future.
