Los Angeles drag performer Maebe A. Girl has become the first drag queen elected to office, successfully running for Silver Lake Neighborhood Council in California.

Girl, who identifies as non-binary and uses the pronouns she/her or they/them, took to social media to celebrate the historic win, writing: "Time to take on the system!"

Known by locals for her political satire, Girl ran on a platform of diversity and inclusion, with a focus on supporting small businesses and enhancing public spaces.
"I’m honored to be the first drag queen elected official here in L.A. and, I believe, in all of California and the West Coast," Girl said, according to .

"I can’t wait to use my new platform to advance the LGBTQ community and provide visibility for those that have historically been kept in the shadows of society. I hope my successful run inspires others to do the same in their own communities."

She will be sworn into office on May 1.
