Just under a year ago, an estimated 30,000 people gathered on the lawns of Sydney's Prince Alfred Park, waiting anxiously to learn the result of the national same-sex marriage postal survey.
Now the successful 'Yes' campaign will be commemorated for generations to come, with a section of the popular city park to be renamed 'Equality Green' following an "enthusiastic" and "unanimous" vote by Sydney City Council last night.
The proposal was originally put forward by Alex Greenwich, member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly seat of Sydney, and supported by Lord Mayor Clover Moore, who was a vocal advocate for same-sex marriage throughout the postal survey.
“Cheers and jubilant shouts of ‘yes’ rang out across the park,” Clover Moore recalled in a video she and Greenwich posted to social media yesterday.
She added: “After years of campaigning, and months of enduring the hurt and hostility caused by the survey, it was time to celebrate.
“Love had won a landslide victory.”
Australia Says Yes documents the campaign for marriage equality in Australia on the one year anniversary of the historic decision.
