World famous artist Leonardo da Vinci is set to be re-imagined for television, with a series titled Leonardo in the works for Italy's RAI and Lux Vide.

The English-language series will show the Italian painter as he's never been seen before, exploring “the personal and adventurous aspects of his life", rather than the "purely artistic ones.”

Showrunner Frank Spotnitz (The Man in the High Castle) and writer Steve Thompson (Sherlock) have already been attached to the project, according to .
“He was a real outsider for those times,” said RAI head of drama Eleonora Andreatta.

“He was an illegitimate child, gay, vegetarian and left-handed.”

Set to premiere next year to coincide with the 500-year anniversary of the renaissance artist's death, it's believed that Leonardo won't shy away from the da Vinci's sexuality.

It's believed that da Vinci was arrested when he was 24-years-old, with some historians believing that he was in a long-term relationship with his young apprentice, Gian Giacomo Caprotti.
