Australian actor Margot Robbie has spoken out about her desire to explore character Harley Quinn's sexuality. Robbie originally played the Quinn in 2016 DC film Suicide Squad - and will reprise the role in Birds of Prey, set to be released in 2020.

Speaking to , Robbie pointed to the original DC comics, in which Harley Quinn shared a close relationship with fellow villain Poison Ivy.

“If you read the comics you know that Poison Ivy and Harley have an intimate relationship," she said. "In some comics they convey it as a friendship, in other comics you can see that they’re actually sexually involved as a couple."
She added: “I’ve been trying to - I would love to have Poison Ivy thrown into the universe, because the Harley and Poison Ivy relationship is one of my favourite aspects of the comics, so I’m looking to explore that on screen.”

On the subject of casting the role, Robbie says she is "open-minded".

“I’ve thought about it a lot and there’s no one person who springs to mind," she said. "I’m pretty open-minded."

Back in 2015 Harley Quinn writers Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner tweeted confirmation that the characters were "girlfriends" - adding that their relationship was “without the jealousy of monogamy.”
