Everyone's favourite emo-pop band Panic! At The Disco has endorsed a positive message regarding the use of gender-neutral pronouns; proving the one-man band (AKA guitarist/vocalist Brendon Urie) has got a sense of humour in the process.
The band's tweet was composed in response to a joke made by journalist and author Dana Schwartz, who wrote: “stop pretending like it’s at ALL hard to use to ‘they/them’ pronouns when we’ve all agreed to call Brendon Urie ‘Panic! at the Disco’ even though we know it’s just him.”
Urie was quick to respond, saying that he "approved" of Schwartz's message.
Despite regularly touring with musicians including guitarist Kenneth Harris, drummer Dan Pawlovich and bassist Nicole Row, Urie has been the only official member of the band since 2015 - something that has become a bit of a running joke for the 31-year-old.
Original band members Ryan Ross, Spencer Smith and Brent Wilson have each left P!ATD to pursue different creative endeavours.
It's not the first time Urie/P!ATD has come to the defense of the LGBTIQ+ community.
When the Westboro Baptist Church recorded a parody of Panic!'s hit single “I Write Sins Not Tragedies” (cleverly renaming it “You Love Sin What A Tragedy") in 2014 and threatened to picket one of the band's shows, the Urie used it as an opportunity to raise funds for the Human Rights Campaign - pledging to donate $20.00 for each of the church's protesters.
However, when only 13 WBC protesters arrived at the show, he went one better.
“Thank you to the Westboro Baptist Church for the update on the total amount you donated to Human Rights Campaign today. $20×13= weak," the band wrote on Facebook.
They added: “We’re going to make it an even $1,000. We will also be donating 5% of our total merch sales from this show to HRC.”
