Popular 90s animated series Rocko’s Modern Life is set to return to our screens with a 45-minute revival on Netflix, according to .

The special, titled Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling, will be set 20 years after the original 1996 series finale and follow Rocko and his friends Heffer and Philbert as they return from space to an Earth that barely resembles the one they left behind.

Among the changes, it has  that former character Ralph Bighead has transitioned and now goes by Rachel Bighead - the show's first openly trans character.

Series creator Joe Murray told that the inclusive and 'prominent' story-line was vital to the show's conception.

“When I started writing [Static Cling], I really started latching onto the idea of change and how society has changed and what’s gone on in the last 20 years and the development of our characters and how they would react to change,” he explained.
“It felt natural, because it was not only about change, about somebody finding who they are and making that courageous choice to go through that change.”

GLAAD director of transgender representation, Nick Adams, described the special as "a beautiful - and hilarious - story about accepting change."

Adams, who consulted on the series, continued: “The younger characters accept Rachel immediately, recognising she’s still their friend. And while Rachel’s father is slow to accept change within his own family, even he realises that loving your child should be unconditional."

He added: "This story of inclusion and acceptance is so needed in our current climate.”

Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling airs on Netflix on August 9 (that's today!).
