American obstetrician Jennifer Gunter has labelled American rapper T.I's revelations he takes his daughter to the gynaecologist to make sure the teenager's hymen is still intact 'horrible'.
"This is horrible on so many levels. Let me educate you all about the hymen," wrote Dr Gunter.
T.I., whose real name is Clifford Joseph Harris Jr. revealed to the podcast with Nazanin Mandi and Nadia Moham that he takes his 18-year-old daughter Deyjah Harris to her pelvic exams and accesses the results.
In a Twitter thread Dr Gunter debunked the idea that a hymen equals proof of virginity.
"The hymen is no virginity indicator, 50% of sexually active teens do not have a disrupted hymen. The hymen is often very flexible," she wrote.
"The hymen means nothing physically and hymen exams are medically not a thing and are unnecessary. And support a disgusting patriarchal trope."
Dr Gunter explained the hymen is more rigid at birth and provides more covering for the first three years to keep urine and faeces out of the infant vagina.
"The hymen is like baby teeth. It served a biological purpose for a narrow developmental window and then when no longer needed is discarded."
She also educated readers on the falsity of the "blood stained sheets on the wedding night" trope.
"Two thirds of women have no bleeding with first coitus and for those who do it is usually spotting. The hymen does not have a rich blood supply. Blood stained sheets come from sexual trauma. Also two thirds of women have no pain with first coitus," she ended.
Dr Gunter was joined by a chorus of voices on Twitter labelling the T.I 's surveillance of this daughter as a gross violation of privacy.
