Georgie Stone, trans activist and former Victorian Young Australian of the Year, is heading to Ramsay Street.
The 18 year-old, who at the age of 10 became the youngest Australian to receive hormone blockers, will play the first trans character on long-running soap Neighbours.
“I am so excited to be joining such an iconic show,” Stone said over the weekend, revealing that she had approached producers on her own accord.
“Neighbours is all about telling stories we can connect to, stories that reflect our society today."
She added: “It has progressed so much since it first began, which is why I thought it was time to have a trans character on the show. I can’t wait for everyone to meet her!”
Executive producer Jason Herbison said: “Georgie approached us last year regarding a guest role and I could see she was passionate about acting.
“She also put forward a thought-provoking and important storyline idea.
“Seeing her talent during the audition process, I knew she would be able to tell the story truthfully and authentically, she is an exceptional young woman.”
While, unsurprisingly, some conservative viewers expressed their disappointment at the news, most were thrilled that Neighbours was taking diversity seriously.
Those to congratulate Parker on her role included Greens MP Janet Rice and appearance diversity activist .
