The Breaker Upperers
Fifteen years ago, Mel (Madeleine Sami) and Jen (Jackie van Beek) discovered they were being two-timed by the same man. Bitter and cynical they became fast friends and formed The Breaker Upperers, a small-time business breaking up couples for cash. Now they’re in their late-thirties and business is booming. They’re a platonic, codependent couple who keep their cynicism alive by not getting emotionally involved with anybody else. But when they run into an old victim, Mel develops a conscience and their friendship is truly put to the test.

A Date For Mad Mary
Seána Kerslake shines as ‘mad’ Mary in this underrated Irish film. When she’s released from a short stint in prison, Mary just wants to resume her old life, but it’s not that easy. Her best mate Charlene is avoiding her, distracted by wedding plans. Friendless, Mary goes on a mission to land a date for the wedding and ends up discovering more about herself than she expected. Singer-songwriter Tara Lee features as Jess. Winner of Best Film at the Irish Film and Television Awards, director Darren Thornton’s 2016 film is endearing and charming.
Lola And Her Brothers
The love story in this film is between siblings Lola, Pierre and Benoît (Ludivine Sagnier, José Garcia and Jean-Paul Rouve). Lola is a divorce lawyer who unexpectedly finds love with the smitten Zoher (Ramzy Bedia). Benoît has just been married for the third time to a younger woman desperate to start a family, unbeknownst to him. And Pierre, who’s just lost his job, is trying to keep it all together. Through their regular catch-ups at their parents’ graves, they argue and support each other, laugh and admonish each other. This is a gorgeous film celebrating deep and precious love of all kinds.
My Summer In Provence
Writer/director Rose Bosch takes on the clash of generations in this endearing film. Three kids, teens Léa and Adrien and little Theo, who’s deaf, stay with their grandparents in Provence while their parents are going through a divorce. Due to a falling out between their mother and him, it’s the first time the children have met their grandfather (Jean Reno). He’s not exactly thrilled to see them, nor are the older kids happy about being dumped in a rural area without WIFI. But they have the whole summer to smooth things over.
Last Chance Harvey
From writer/director Joel Hopkins comes this sweet romance between two individuals rather used to feeling unwanted. Dustin Hoffman plays Harvey, a jingle-writer who travels to England to attend his daughter’s wedding, only to feel left out of the family. Emma Thompson plays Kate, an airport worker whose mother frets over her single-dom and friends are determined to find her a mate. Amid the turbulent emotions of the weekend, Harvey unexpectedly falls for the Londoner, spinning his life in a new direction.
50 Is The New 30
French actor Valérie Lemercier also directs this lovable film. Lemercier plays Marie-Francine, who suddenly finds herself out of her marriage and out of a job. At the age of 50, she’s living with her overly involved parents who open an e-cigarette shop to give her something to do. She meets Miguel (Patrick Timsit), a chef in a nearby restaurant, who is in a similar predicament, but is too ashamed to admit it. Their youthful hearts and easy connection make this a delight to watch, as do Marie-Francine’s parents’ shenanigans.
The Female Brain
Creator of 2 Broke Girls, Whitney Cummings directs fellow co-writer Neal Brennan and herself as scientist Julie in this light-hearted rom-com. Julie’s findings about the differences between the male and female brain prompt her to change her way of life. Based on the book by Louann Brizendine, the film analyses common modern-day missteps in the pursuit of romance, the supporting cast bringing the fun as well as the laughs and love. Sofia Vergara, James Marsden, Lucy Punch, Deon Cole and Chris D’elia also star.
Love Is In The Air
Despite his job on flight simulators testing pilots’ reactions under extreme conditions, ever since Yann (Vincent Elbaz) was born on an aeroplane, he’s been afraid of flying. When the love of his life Alice (Marion Cotillard) moved to Australia, he couldn’t face his fear and follow her. Now, turning 30, he’s reflecting on how often his phobia has come between him and happiness. Will it continue to get the best of him or will he finally let love be in the air?
Ash Is Purest White
From director Jia Zhangke (Still Life) comes this 2018 film. Qiao (Zhao Tao) is in love with her small-time gangster boyfriend, Bin (Liao Fan). When a rival gang sets upon him, Qiao fires a gun to protect Bin. For her trouble, she ends up in prison. When she’s released five years later, she wants nothing more than to pick up where they left off, and goes in search of Bin.
Thick Lashes Of Lauri Mantyvaara
The modus operandi of besties Satu and Heidi is to sabotage posh weddings, the pretensions of love being their enemy number 1. But when Heidi falls for rising ice hockey star Lauri Mantyvaara, Satu is left behind, and ends up spending more time with Heidi’s adoring brother, Henri.

This South Korean film follows young couple Woo-jin and Yi-soo who have a unique challenge to their relationship. Each morning, Woo-jin wakes up in a different body. He can be a man or woman, a different age and even a foreigner. While his appearance always changes, he’s always the same person inside. And Yi-soo loves him no matter what.
A Promise
Starring Rebecca Hall, Alan Rickman and Richard Madden, A Promise is based on the novel by Stefan Zweig and centres on a married woman who falls in love with her husband’s protégé. In Germany on the brink of WWI, their duties and then the war separate them, inspiring them to pledge their devotion to one another, against the odds.
