French police have raided Islamic associations and foreigners suspected of holding extremist beliefs, following the beheading of a history teacher who showed his class caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin says around 80 investigations have been launched to combat online hate speech.

Mr Darmanin says he is also considering disbanding some French Muslim organisations for allegedly promoting violence and hate.

This comes two weeks after a speech by French President Macron in which he says “Islam is in crisis”.

Professor Fethi Mansouri holds the UNESCO Chair in comparative research on 'Cultural Diversity and Social Justice' and an Alfred Deakin Research Chair in migration and intercultural studies.

He spoke to SBS Arabic24 about the latest events in France.
