Australia is one of the world's most multicultural nations but our Parliament isn't. Does it matter?


Political representation is a vital part of democracy. It ensures all voices are reflected in Parliament’s decision-making process.

But, Australia is falling short.

With of the population having an overseas, non-European background, in Parliament that sits at only 6 per cent.

Dr Intifar Chowdury, lecturer in Government at Flinders University said a Parliament that reflects its people is crucial to improving social cohesion.

“The political party acts as a gatekeeper in putting people from diverse backgrounds into safe seats or not.”
