Sa edad na 17, tumakas si Hedayat Osyan mula sa Afghanistan upang makaiwas sa Taliban. Ipinasok siya ng mga smuggler sa iba't ibang lugar bago makarating sa Australia sakay ng bangka.
Si Hedayat ay ikinulong sa Christmas Island, at pagkatapos ay sa Melbourne, bago makamit ang permanent residency.
Noong 2016, nakahanap siya ng part-time na trabaho sa konstruksyon.
“During this time I found that lots of refugees, they are struggling to find a job. Some of them who get [a] job, they're being exploited in the workforce due to language barrier, lack of a network," sinabi niya sa SBS Examines.
Itinatag ni Hedayat ang Community Construction, isang social enterprise na nag-e-empleyo ng mga refugee at asylum seeker. Nakumpleto na nila ang higit sa 300 proyekto at may higit sa 100 empleyado.
“I'm receiving at least five application every day from refugees. They want to work, they want to contribute, they want to support their families. They don't want to be on Centrelink, but there's no equal opportunities," ani Hedayat.
Ayon sa Department of Home Affairs, umabot sa $13 bilyon ang ginastos sa offshore processing mula 2011 hanggang 2023.
"That works out on average, over that time, to be over half a million dollars per person who we have sent offshore," ayon kay Jana Favero, deputy CEO ng Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.
Naniniwala siya na ang onshore processing ay isang posibleng solusyon.
“The comprehensive plan that was brought in under Malcolm Fraser meant that we welcomed and we resettled people directly into Australia, so they weren't having to risk their lives . . . they were also coming in and contributing to Australia," dagdag niya.
