This year's Lunar New Year falls on Wednesday, 29 January. Also known as the Spring Festival, the celebration of the new year, that is based on the traditional Chinese calendar system, lasts for several weeks.
One of the Indonesian communities in Sydney took part in celebrating this important cultural event by joining the parade to welcome the start of the wooden snake year at the city's Northern suburban, Chatswood.
Anny Widagdo is an Indonesian who is actively involved in the local Catholic church. Recognising the importance of the community, she invited her group to take part in this parade.
The Lantern Parade, which took place on February 1st, was joined in by around 400 participants from 22 local groups in Chatswood.
Nevertheless, visitors to this event come from different areas in Sydney.
Chad, who lives in Lane Cove, said he found out about the event from a Facebook group he followed. He then invited Michael, who lives in Redfern, to come along.
As for Taiwanese-descent local, Rachel Wu, events like this become the opportunity to get closer to other community groups and better understand each other's cultures.
