Virgin Australia has been placed into voluntary administration with the accounting firm Deloitte named as the administrator.

The Federal Opposition says it's in Australia's national interest for government intervention to help protect Virgin Australia.

The airline is now in voluntary administration and will keep operating while Deloite administrators work with potential investors on recapitalising the airline.

Virgin Australia owes 5 billion and has been crippled by the Covid-19 restrictions which have been disastrous for the global aviation industry.

Opposition leader Anthony Albanse says the ALP is concerned about what might be left of the airline as it goes through administration.

He says government intervention is in the national interest.
