The Koori Knockout is more than just a showcase of fierce competition on the footy field, it’s a powerful celebration of First Nations culture and community. While players go head-to-head, the event also provides a valuable platform for small Blak businesses, allowing First Nations creators and entrepreneurs to shine and share their work throughout the weekend.

Among the standout business owners this year is Shelby-Rae Lyons, a proud Wiradyuri woman and the creator of Marara Designs, a home and lifestyle brand. Shelby-Rae’s stunning designs, inspired by her connection to her culture, range from wooden plaques and educational cultural games to chopping boards, handbags, hats, and baby items. Shelby has also partnered with Sportsgirl to produce Acknowledgement of Country plaques, now proudly displayed in all their stores across Australia as well as online.

Also featured at the Knockout is Tarni Jane, a proud Mununjali, Wiradyuri, and Kamilaroi woman and the owner of Tarni Jane Designs. Her business reflects her deep cultural connection, offering a variety of items including T-shirts, water bottles, lanyards, and phone cases. Tarni also creates beautiful canvas artworks that feature on her website. Tarni uses her creativity as a way of story telling and keeping her culture alive.

Both Shelby and Tarni had a yarn to NITV Radio at the Koori Knockout about their business, the significance of the event and how it is giving a platform to showcase and support Blak businesses.
