Blak Women’s Healing is a significant YIRRAMBOI program and whole-building takeover at Arts House curated by Wemba-Wemba and Gunditjmara visual artist and academic, Dr Paola Balla.

“Bush-dyeing is a laborious and involved learning process which I find soothing. Deep listening and being present is critical to this work. It is repetitive, meditative and holds all of the attributes of mindfulness practice,” says Balla.

Dr Paola Balla takes over the Arts House in Naarm, Melbourne for Yirramboi, creating an immersive and inteactive arts and cultural space for Blak Women's Healing.

Balla is an artists, academic and researcher and her cutorial take over seeks to, “Blak Women’s Healing acknowledges the grief, strength and continuation of our culture.”

The collaborating Aboriginal women working with Balla to deliver Blak Women’s Healing include:

Cousins and Sisters – a group of aunties from Echuca
Kath Apma Penangke Travis – a Stolen Generation survivor, historian and postdoctoral fellow
Blak women from the western suburbs – inspiring voices of Aboriginal women that continue to educate others

During the four-week Blak Women’s Healing program, Balla’s installation and other spaces within the North Melbourne Town Hall will host communal gatherings including yarning circles, artist talks, live-weaving, workshops and more.
