They say the law is an ass. A herd of donkeys learned this the hard way in India after having a run-in with the law which had them incarcerated for three days, and were freed only after an intervention by a politician.
In a bizarre case, police in India arrested a herd of donkeys last week for destroying plants outside a jail.
The prison security staff in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh detained donkeys in Jalaun district and kept them in custody for three days before they were released on Monday. Police said the animals had eaten expensive plants that the authorities bought for Rs. 500,000 ($10,000).
"These donkeys had destroyed some very expensive plants which our senior officer had arranged for planting inside the jail and despite warnings, the owner let loose his animals here so we detained the donkeys," a jail official was quoted by news agency ANI as saying.
The eight donkeys were detained on November 24, following which the owners made frantic search for the animals. Someone informed the owner about the donkeys having been detained by police.
The owner then approached the police with his request to let the animals go free but the officials refused to release the donkeys.
The four-legged criminals were only released from the custody after a local leader of India’s ruling political party- the BJP, intervened and submitted the bail amount for their release.
