“Haniyeh will become a kind of shaheed in the eyes of Islamic radicals”

Ismail Haniya, the head of the Hamas Politburo, was killed yesterday in Tehran. This was reported by the Palestinian group itself, as well as by the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Hamas accuses Israel of assassination. Israel has so far neither claimed responsibility nor denied its involvement in the alleged assassination. Meanwhile, the Lebanese radical Shiite group Hezbollah has confirmed that the commander of the armed groups, Fuad Shukr, died as a result of an Israeli strike on a house in southern Beirut.

Leonid Petrov, an orientalist, dean of the International College of Management in Sydney and a researcher at the Australian National University in Canberra, shares his opinion on what these events will lead to, what Ismail Haniya will be remembered for, and whether Iran's new President Masoud Pezeshkian will bring hope to the country's people.
