Shahzaib's father was in New York when he heard about the car accident. From obtaining an Australian visa to receiving all the help here, he talks about the support he got from the local community.


The father of a young Pakistani man killed in a car accident in Australia has thanked the local community and Consul General Abdul Majid Yousfani for their support.

A University of New England student Syed Shahzaib Ali, 21, died on 12th October, 2016 on the New England Highway, south of Uralla in a head-on crash that also claimed life of a 41-year-old man.

Shahzaib’s father, Adnan Muhammad Ali, was in New York when he was informed of the accident.

“I knew something bad had happened at the time I was told that my son had had an accident,” said Mr Ali while talking to (click audio for complete interview).

Soon after that Mr Ali contacted the Australian and Pakistani authorities in the US to make arrangements for visiting Sydney.

“I was treated very well by both entities. I didn’t even have to go to Washington and got the visa to travel to Australia in half an hour,” he said.

Mr Ali was received in Australia by his friends and family who had already established contact with the local authorities and made necessary arrangements for him to handle the situation.

“I would like to specially thank the Consul General Abdul Majid Yousfani who treated this case with so much compassion and sympathy as if Shahzaib was his own child,” Mr Ali said.

“The consul general even invited me over to his place and handed over Shahzaib’s file to me personally.”

Mr Ali, who is currently in Australia, has also thanked the local community that came in large numbers to provide support to his family.

“The community here lives like a family, and I don’t have words to describe how thankful I am for their support.”

Mr Ali also met the University of New England’s vice chancellor who extended support to the bereaved family.

“We also met with the local police whose investigation shows no wrongdoing on part of Shahzaib, and they have concluded that the accident occurred because the other driver had fallen asleep,” Mr Ali said.

While Shahzaib is no more with us, his father feels for every child and has a word of advice for all the Pakistani families and youngsters in Australia.

He has urged the youngsters to get fantasized by the charm and glamour of life abroad and instead keep their attention and focus on studies.
